Eleven years covering the city the tourists never see.
LA Magazine was started in a Silver Lake apartment by a former editor at Los Angeles Magazine and a digital producer from Vanity Fair — two writers who thought the city's most interesting stories were being missed by everyone else. A decade later, we are still here, still independent, and still on Sunset Boulevard.
The founders, in the Silver Lake apartment where the first issue was edited in 2014.
We didn't want to write for the people visiting Los Angeles. We wanted to write for the ones already living here — the ones who knew which block of Sunset had just changed hands, who noticed when a new restaurant opened without a press release, who cared which developer was finally cleaning up that empty lot on Virgil. That has been the entire pitch since day one.
Eleven writers. Eleven neighborhoods.
Every reporter on staff lives in the beat they cover. Our full-time editorial team of eleven writes from a converted storefront on Sunset Boulevard in Silver Lake — the same neighborhood where the publication began.

Restaurants & Style
Two reporters sharing the city's hardest beat: openings, closings, and the room where the city's taste is actually decided. They've broken first-look coverage on 14 restaurant openings before the LA Times in 2024 alone.

A dedicated correspondent tracking the developers, architects, and zoning fights shaping the city's skyline and its single-family blocks. Twenty years covering Los Angeles construction before joining the masthead.

Galleries, film premieres, public art, and the less-covered corners of the creative scene — Boyle Heights murals, Highland Park studios, the Koreatown poetry rooms. Two hundred exclusive interviews with LA chefs, designers, and developers in 2024.
Read the Culture section →Independent of the legacy print title — and proud of it.
LA Magazine, Inc. is an independent digital publisher founded in 2014. We are not affiliated with, owned by, or endorsed by the legacy print publication Los Angeles Magazine, an Emmis Communications title that ceased regular print frequency in 2023.
Readers sometimes ask us about the similarity in name. The short version: the legacy title ran out of Emmis's Los Angeles office for decades and was once the largest city magazine in the country. Our publication began a decade ago, online only, from a Silver Lake apartment, with two editors who had previously worked at that title. We share a city and a few former colleagues. That is the extent of the connection.
We have also made three specific decisions about how this publication operates, none of which we plan to reverse:
- 01No paywall. Every feature, every review, every newsletter is free to read. We are supported by readers and by a small number of premium advertisers — not by subscriptions.
- 02No native ad shop. We do not produce sponsored content for brands. The editorial team has not written a paid post since 2021 and has no plans to start.
- 03No sponsored editorial since 2021. If a brand appears in a story, it is because the editorial team chose to write about it — full stop.
Reader trust, measured.
Four figures we point to when brands ask whether the audience is real. It is.
